What is the difference between Stainless and Mild Steel?

There are several perspectives by which stainless and mild steel can be differentiated.

• The Alloying Element – This is the prior feature that distinguishes stainless and mild steel. The alloying element of stainless steel is chromium. Whereas, mild steel is made up of carbon.

These two elements cast different results in the angle of malleability, corrosion resistance, and ductility, and also cost. This is one of the key differences between the two.

• Rust – Stainless steel is more corrosion resistant than mild steel due to its element chromium. The chrome present inside reacts with the oxygen outside to form chromium oxide. It acts as the protective skin over the surface of the steel resulting in it being undamaged.

The stainless steel is corrosion resistant naturally. There are separate stainless steels available at different grades. This makes them suitable as per their pursuing environment.

On the other hand, mild steel does not have this protective chromium oxide layer which makes the iron-free to react with oxygen to form iron oxide or rust. In order to have a protective surface, mild steel requires galvanizing or other external processes.

• Fabrication – Stainless steel is impact resistant than Mild steel. Do you know why? Because it is made up of chrome which is a hard alloy. But, mild steel is much more malleable than stainless one. Hence, it is mostly used in fabrication.

• Cost – The cost of the metal acts as one of the vital differences between the two. Although chromium in stainless steel makes it durable and corrosion-resistant, it is much of expensive than mild steel. Because chromium carries the maximum price.
